When I was growing up, I was so so blessed to have a grandfather who took me to the dump for fun. I guess you could also say that I was equally blessed that I didn’t contract some deadly disease in said dump. I don’t know that my Grandma was ok with such an activity as “dump-diving”, but Grandpa took us anyway (possibly without her knowledge).
He was amazing with finding treasures in the trash! And it was indeed FUN!
That same Grandpa was a fabulous wood worker and I am so thankful to have lots of furniture that he made for me! I spent a lot of time painting and finishing each piece he made for me and in the process learned a lot about painting and staining furniture. I also fell in love with this hobby, and while I don’t get to do it much anymore, I still love to see others take an ugly piece of furniture and make it irresistible!
Here are some of my favorites out there…
Sandy, at Paint Me White, does such beautiful work! I LOVE this armoire that she painted a french blue and dry-brushed white on top. Then she sanded it down to reveal the original black underneath. Absolutely stunning!
This is a fun DIY success from Centsational Girl. Check out the full post! I can’t believe how ugly this piece used to be!
This piece is charming if you can look beyond the ugly color and see the beautiful wood details!
This is what The Crafting Chicks saw in it! I love the wallpaper on the back! Great idea and nice contrast with the red!
New paint, hardware, and update by removing the mirror back and…
You get a one of a kind piece! I also love the idea of storing your liquor in it! Partial bar storage! Very clever! Makes me want to go find an old china cabinet! Round Top, here I come!
Who didn’t have this type of stool growing up? They must have been a dime a dozen! But look…
Renders me speechless. Of course you know how I am around pink and gold! But seriously! Brilliant!
Speaking of Round Top, old doors like this are literally in piles out there twice a year! I’m doin it! Everyone is getting an outdoor drink station made from an old door for Christmas!
This beauty is actually on the market on Etsy! I wish she had before pics up! Someone buy it please! And send me pics!
Grandpa made this bed for a friend of mine before he passed away in 2007. And I painted it black for her. She was amazing enough to give it back to me several years ago. I’ve kept it black until this move. I even thought about getting a new headboard for our new home. But in the end I couldn’t think of one that I would love more than the one my Grandpa made. But I was done with the black. Here’s a before.
I love that the lines are imperfect as he cut and shaped each piece by hand. I love and miss my Grandpa!
I will say I didn’t paint it this time. I had my friend, Becky do it. She did a great job and it turned out to be the perfect choice for my new room. I love it all over again!
Such a different feel than when it was black, but it’s still my Grandpa’s handiwork! It makes me happy.
I hope this inspires YOU to turn a piece of trash into your very own treasure!
Happy Hump Day!
