Custom Design is the coolest, right! I mean if you can imagine it, you can make it happen! Ceiling designs to mirror the carpet, crystal sconces hanging from the ceiling for bedside lighting, beautiful silk window treatments, custom upholstered headboards and settees, custom bedding and metallic grasscloth on the walls all make this space that I designed for a client, a special and a one of a kind space!
Of course, all of that “custom” and “one of a kind” comes with a price tag! If you’re in your forever home and have the extra funds to create your dream space then I say GO FOR IT! But that’s obviously not the case for all of us! But, here’s the good news! Even if you are slightly strapped for cash and have a much smaller budget, I’m of the mind that it can be just as special with a little bit of effort and thought!

7 Helpful Tips To Save
Let’s start with the walls. Skipping the wallpaper for now, and going with an updated glamorous paint color is one of the most effective bangs for your buck! Also, an easy change down the road if you decide you just can’t live without the grasscloth!
2 FOR 1 PIECES
This tip could apply for a space-saving idea as well. To save money in a bedroom, one of my most used tricks is to use a chest in place of a bedside table. This knocks out the need for storage and the need for a bedside surface. It could potentially eliminates the need for a dresser entirely. You could also use this and replace one the bedside tables with a desk! Not only does it combine two needs into one, but it draws interest to a corner of the room by mixing up your typical ‘matchy-matchy” symmetrical bedside table look.
SHOP WITH COLOR IN MIND
A big eye catcher in a custom design often has to do with the color scheme chosen in the room. However, the color itself isn’t custom. What I mean is, with a little bit of effort you can find great replacement pieces in the same color scheme as you would in a custom piece! For example, the purple settee! Believe it or not purple or “aborigine” is pretty sought after these days! Go to websites like Joss and Main, Wayfair, or Hayneedle and search for your color of choice. You’re almost guaranteed to be tickled pink… or purple or whatever makes your heart pound a little faster!
Ready Made Window Treatments
No doubt about it, window treatments are a must if you want a custom look! But you can find some pretty fabulous alternatives that will give you a more than satisfactory replacement to custom drapery. Obviously you may not be able to pick out a precise fabric for the treatment, but you may be surprised with the choices out there!
Another fabulous component that makes a custom space special is mixing & matching different textures. If everything in the space is of the same texture, it’s hard for the eye to find interest. So when you’re shopping for your room on a budget keep this tip in mind. Remember to add in, silk with wool, or fur with velvet, etc. In my example above I incorporated some fluffy fun on the bench with silk in the bedding and metallic leather on the headboard.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it as long as I’m in the design business! DON’T GO BUY A FURNITURE SET!! Please please! I’m begging you! Mix it up! The days of 5 piece ALL WOOD STAINED sets is gone with the wind! Thank the Heavenly Father! When you’re shopping for all the components of your new space, think of different kinds of surfaces. In our example, I’ve mixed painted wood, acrylic, mirror, glass, and crystal. All of these materials come together to create a fabulous masterpiece that doesn’t look like it’s all from the same store!
And finally, don’t leave out the art. Even if you’re on a budget! Budget this essential finishing touch in for sure! Here’s the good news! There are some B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. alternative from sites such as Etsy! Most of us can’t have one of a kind art in every room in our house or maybe any room for that matter! But don’t just skip this step! I promise your space is sure to look like a beautifully, professionally designed space with a carefully selected piece of reproduction art.
