You know how people seem to follow this prototypical home design? Formal living, Formal dining, breakfast nook, and the all important (or really completely useless) home office!
It usually consists of a huge clunky desk, a brown leather tufted chair, and seating in front of the desk. The seating is for your guests to come in and sit across from you as you sit in your much more superior leather “High-Horse” and explain to them how important you are, hence your “Home Study”.
I mean really. I’m not dogging the furniture here. I’m sure it’s very well made and it’s quite beautiful but tell me, besides showing off, what is it’s functionality? Not to mention uniqueness.
Needless to say, I’m not a big proponent of the formal living and dining rooms or the all-powerful home study. Waisted square footage if you ask me.
However, home offices are quite necessary for many families. But might I suggest infusing your own personal taste into your office and making it, well, less stuffy? I mean wouldn’t this increase your productivity? And possibly your social life? There are so many cool examples now! Be carefree, ambitious, fearless! Break out of the stuffy “I’m so important, I have a home study” mold! you can do it!!
Style for Her
I believe that your best work is accomplished in your favorite atmosphere! Of course this varies according to personalities. Maybe you LIKE that stuffy huge mahogany stained Haverty’s desk! Maybe you thrive in such an atmosphere! If this is the case, then by all means, remain stuffy. However, if you’re most favorite color IN THE WORLD is purple then…
I’d say, this calls for fearlessness. But what are we afraid of really? Keeping up with the Jones’s? How bout YOU be the Jones’s! Before long, everyone in the neighborhood will want fuschia bookshelves! LOL… Well, maybe not, but you’ll be happy!
I am IN LOVE with this emerald desk! I’m not a big animal print fan, but someone is and, WOW, it’s making a statement!
If you were able to read my Pink Obsession post you know why I’m drawn to this office! Love the blush with brown and white! Gorgeous!
Simply stunning could describe this home office! turquoise and white! Very clean, very classy!
Style for Him
So, we need to look at some masculine styles that depart from stuffy…
Here you have retained control of the leather “God-Father” seat BUT combined with this not-so-clunky desk, it’s not so over-powering and predictable! Plus, the gray walls and cabinetry combined with that fabulous pendant light!
Again with the masculine gray walls! Elements of surprise, that venture from the predictable norm: the parchment desk is a bright addition to an otherwise dark room. And the chairs are not your typical wingback leather office seating.
I really like this office! Definitely more masculine than feminine, but that pop of yellow leather is another departure from stuffy to be certain! I also love the lantern light fixture and the desk. Is it galvanized?
Of course, if it’s a functioning home office (meaning someone actually needs to make a living out of it) then functionality must be considered, but certainly not at the expense of style!
Wow! I’d be more than happy to “work” in this office! Check out the carpet detail and the chairs! Plus just simply adding that beautiful green to the inside of the bookshelves! Brilliant!
Obviously a functioning and efficient workspace, but the wallpaper and cabinetry color bring things to life!
Fun details such as the pink trim on the white desk with a gold lamp or the pinboard with nail heads on the pale blue desk, are so creative and inviting!
