I look at house plans for a living. I talk to clients (including myself) all the time who want to do away with their dining room. Let’s face it, the “formal dining room” days are over. I mean really who still has FORMAL dinner parties!?! As much as we’d all like to live in the Downton Abbey Mansion we just don’t!
But here’s why is true of our culture today! We do still love to sit around the table and connect! My goal in designing my own home is always how to get people to feel comfy enough to stay longer! So, I’ve come up with 6 ways to design a dining room around connection!
When you’re designating a spot in your home for the dining room think outside the box! Gone are the days of a formal snooty room. I love this space that screams comfort and connection! Find a cozy corner in your home and throw in some unexpected pieces for comfort first!
Who says a dining chair has to be a certain way? I love this idea to use these comfy wing back chairs to ensure long hours of conversation!
Mix & Match
And while we’re on seating, don’t get stuck thinking you have to be matchy-matchy! I say it all the time! Mixing and matching patterns and styles instills a feeling of homey-ness to a space! If you’re short on space, then think of tucking away a couple of ottomans somewhere else until needed at the table.
DO NOT, for the love of everything holy, leave out color in your dining room! Color is what beckons people! It’s what call them in and makes them want to investigate further! It’s like a bowl of candy, that is calling our your name! You can’t resist! You must get closer! Think of adding color in the chairs, rug, walls, art. Just add it somewhere!
Lisa Mende, definitely did not leave out color here, but what I want to point out from this design is the lighting! Not to mention the ceiling! Don’t stop your design on the walls, go up to the ceiling! Think of interesting lighting that will adequately and appropriately light the space for your guests! And make it fun! Remember! Stuffy is OUT!!
And finally, think of cozying up the space with accessories such as soft pillows! This dining room by Tobi Fairley feels as cozy as a living room! Plenty of comfy seating for everyone to sit and stay a LONG while!
Combine all 6 of these suggestions for an absolutely fabulous and up to date dining room design that will demand attention from your friends and family and guarantee awesome connection time for all! The holidays are just around the corner! It’s definitely NOT to early to begin your dining room transformation!
Happy Whimsy Wednesday!
